Frank Pegoda

Frank Pegoda was born on 17 Mar 1873 in Walker County, Texas to John Pegoda and Nancy McGraw [1, 2, 3, 4, 11]. He married Lula Mae Burnett (daughter of Denton P. Burnett and Loretta Josephine Jones [14, 15]) on 22 Jun 1902 in Walker County, Texas [6, 7]. Frank and Lula had 12 children.

Frank's year of birth is a bit unclear as several years have been indicated by various records: 1870 (death certificate, funeral home records) [2, 3], 1871 (grave marker, a census record) [4, 8], 1872 (some census records) [9, 10], or 1873 (Pegoda Bible record, some census records) [1, 11, 12]. The year 1870 has been ruled out based on the birth dates of Frank's siblings (see the entry in this book for John Pegoda). I have assumed the year 1873 is correct based on the Bible record and the 1880 and 1930 census records. I would lean towards 1871 as the other likely option.

Frank worked as a prison guard in his youth. He is seen in the 1900 United States census in Fort Bend County, Texas working as a prison guard [8]. In all later census records he is listed as being a farmer [9, 10, 12].

There is a story told to me about Frank by his daughter Birdette Pegoda Alexander. Some prisoners had escaped from a prison in Huntsville where Frank and Lula were living at the Pegoda homestead on Possum Walk road. Apparently the men ended up hiding in the woods somewhere out near the homestead. Frank (and possible another man) went out after them. The children remember their daddy coming out of the woods on a horse with his gun out driving the prisoners in front of him. Prison guard training came in handy.

The Pegoda family suffered one of the profound tragedies found in our family. At the age of 28, their son Henry Eugene was struck by a train while driving a truck near Bremond, Robertson, Texas [13]. Nothing is known about the cause of the accident. Henry was not married and had no children. He was buried in Bath (Possum Walk) Cemetery [4].

As related in a separate post, Frank and Lula owned a large Bible that has been passed down to their daughter Birdette. When I met with Birdette and her daughter Kay in 2006, the Bible was in very bad condition. But, Kay was opposed to restoring it for fear of it not turning out to not look the way the children and grandchildren remembered it. I was saddened because the Bible will likely soon be unsalvageable.

Frank died of prostate cancer at the old Huntsville Memorial Hospital on 15 Aug 1949 in Huntsville, Texas [2, 3, 4, 5]. He was buried on 16 Aug 1949 at Bath (Possum Walk) Cemetery, Walker County, Texas [2, 3, 4, 5].
