Today in Family History - 25 Dec

There are two events to celebrate on this blessed day. Two of my ancestors celebrate their birthday today with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

My 3rd great-grandmother Mary Louise Traylor (Baldwin line) was born on this day in 1838 in Perry County, Alabama [1, 2].

My 5th great-grandfather John N. Womack, Sr. (Baldwin line) was born on this day in 1776 in Caswell County, North Carolina [3, 4, 5].

Today in Family History - 24 Dec

I normally only post events from history for my direct ancestors, but there are a few profound events in the family that deserve to be noted.

My great grandaunt Esther Lauretta Thompson, sister of my great-grandfather Austin William Thompson, committed suicide on this day, Christmas Eve, in 1936 by drowning herself in Lake Mona near Muskegon, Michigan. I do not know the circumstances in her life leading up to this tragic day and can only speculate. Perhaps she could not deal with the passing of her parents in the three years before.

In any case, this is a sad family event at such a precious time of the year.

Today in Family History - 21 Dec

My 3rd great-grandfather Jack D. Clarke (Baldwin line) died on this day in 1892 presumably in Walker County, Texas [1]. He was buried some 20 steps from the grave of Sam Houston at Oakwood Cemetery (Section 1) in Huntsville, Walker, Texas [2]. His original marker was a small stone with only "J.D. Clark" on it. In 2008, I had an additional marker placed at his grave indicating his birth and death dates.

My 4th great-grandmother Rebecca B. Pierce (Erickson line) died on this day in 1848 in Bradford County, Pennsylvania [1]. She was buried at Ashland Cemetery in Wellsburg, Chemung, New York [1].

Another event today could be related to our family history. It is believed that a man named John Pleasant Worsham (Baldwin line) is likely my 5th great-grandfather. He was born on this day in1764 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia [2]. Unfortunately, no proof of parentage to my 4th great-grandfather Jeremiah Worsham (1788-1863) has been found.

My 2nd great-grandmother James "Jimmie" Adda Anders was born on this day in 1874 in Milam County, Texas [1, 2, 3]. It should be noted that the birth date on Jimmie's grave marker is not correct. The death certificate and family records cited are assumed to be correct.

Today in Family History - 07 Dec

On this Pearl Harbor Day, there are three events to remember in our family history.

First, my grandfather Clark Minard Thompson was born on this day in 1910 in Muskegon, Muskegon, Michigan [1, 2, 3, 4].

Second, my 3rd great-grandparents John Pegoda and Nancy McGraw (Anders line) were married on this day in 1865 in Walker County, Texas [5, 6]. This was John's second marriage.

The third event lives in the more distant past and is undocumented. My 7th great-grandfather Richard Womack, III was reportedly born on this day in 1710. If you have any documentation for Richard, please leave a comment.

Today in Family History - 30 Nov

My 5th great-grandfather Robert Rankin (Anders line) possibly (likely? might have?) died on this day in 1837 in St. Landry Parish Louisiana [1, 2, 3]. Various sources give Robert's date of death as 01 Nov, 13 Nov, or 30 Nov. I have never been able to ascertain which one is the correct date, but have chosen 30 Nov. The primary source [1] has the misspelled date "thirteth" which could be either "thirteenth" or "thirtieth" but in all likelihood 30 Nov is correct.

Robert's place of death is also not well understood. He lived in Texas until shortly before his death. It is not clear why he returned to Louisiana before dying.

Robert was initially buried at Butler Cemetery in Coldspring, Texas. His body was re-interred at Texas State Cemetery on 11 Jun 1936 not far from the grave of Stephen F. Austin.

It should be noted that the back of Robert's grave marker is incorrect (or at best incomplete) as it does not mention son William Marshall Rankin.
